The Lost Close

Unique Underground Whisky and Gin tastings

During the renovation of The Court, part of an old close was found that is believed to have led from the Royal Mile to Cowgate. Now this old close is now a unique space to experience whisky, gin and local craft beer.

Each room was designed to highlight the historic features such as horse hair wall plaster over 200 years old. The central "close" boasts a spacious green leather booth, where our expert guides host whisky, Gin and beer tastings.

The Lost Close hosts diverse tastings — Whisky, craft beer, and Gin, alongside seasonal events for Halloween and Christmas. Perfect for private occasions like corporate functions or wedding receptions, it offers an ideal setting.

During CoDE's renovation, a concealed basement emerged beneath fire debris dating back almost two centuries. Historical maps reveal Closes, residences, taverns, and the Royal Bank. Steil's Close, Royal Bank Close, and Hangman's Close vanished post-1824, converging into Old Fishmarket Close which exists today. The newfound Close, marked by gradual steps and a clear arch, connects to Old Fishmarket Close, though its specific identity remains uncertain.
